*(Not including a white shirt and LBD)
My life ranges from hectic to uneventful, and each day tends to be different from the last. Whether I am just going to work or somewhere exciting, I try to be relatively put together so that if I do make a spontaneous plan to meet up with a friend at a bar or go to a movie after work, I don’t have to worry about going home to make a quick change.
Also in a city like Bombay your home and office can be miles apart so it helps to be dressed in a way that can make you feel good no matter where the day takes you. These are some things from my closet that I have had for years and still get a lot of wear out of. I feel like we live in a very trend focused time and there are so many fast fashion stores both online and offline to access trend driven clothes. Personally, I also look at fast fashion and high street stores for trendy pieces, but for clothes that I know will work for me season after season, I don’t mind spending a little more.
Every woman has her personal style but I do believe that well made, well-tailored clothing makes for a good foundation in any wardrobe regardless of personal style. Most people will own the classics like a black blazer, a white shirt, blue jeans etc, so I wanted to create a list of clothes that are classics in my wardrobe, even if they may not qualify as classic items otherwise.
I wanted to provide shopping links for all of the products in each category that are well made and price wise in a relatively approachable range, hopefully a few items from this list make for lovely additions in your closet, or at the very least make for a good read.
1) The Silk Shirt /Silk Cami
I adore a white shirt and I would never pack a suitcase without one, but sometimes you just need a touch more. A good quality silk shirt is actually quite breathable and won’t make you feel too warm. Personally I gravitate towards silk shirts and camis to a point where I don’t mind repurchasing old favorites; I have worn these in the summer tucked into denim shorts and in the winter over skinny black leather pants. Whether you wear a silk shirt/cami with a skirt or boyfriend jeans, it instantly adds a touch of effortless style and romanticism to any look.

– Silk Shirt, available in store at Marks and Spencer
2) Tailored Pants
A good pair of well made pants will take you from the conference room to the club, through holidays and on work days when you have nothing to wear. You can always rely on tapered pants to dress up or dress down an outfit. There is always that party or event that you cant decide how to dress for and so you call a friend, unsure of what level of formal you need to be dressed at, and what you should wear. A tapered pair of pants will always come to the rescue. Pair these with three quarter sleeved t shirts for the day or with a silk cami for the night, and you cant go wrong in my book.
A couple seasons ago palazzo pants were as popular as culottes are today, personally I don’t gravitate towards the culottes’ style but I think girls who can rock that trend are great.
A classic pinstripe, houndstooth, floral, checkered- whatever you find yourself leaning towards, this type of pant is great for days you don’t want to wear jeans, for flights or even to a happy hour. You can tailor the length to work with heels or flats, and you will always look like you put more effort in your outfit than you actually did.

A great replacement for a regular t-shirt or cami, body suits don’t ride up when you tuck them into high waisted bottoms. I think high waisted bottoms and bodysuits are such a good combination for a night out.
I have some girlfriends that will shy away from high waisted bottoms because they feel like high waisted bottoms are not flattering on them. People often say ‘celebrate your curves’ but it seems as if a lot of people forget there are other curves aside from assess and boobs. Even if you have a heavier midriff, I would urge you to go a store you’d usually shop at and look at different high waisted bottoms like wide leg pants, jeans or even a billowy skirt and see how you feel in a bodysuit tucked into some high waisted bottoms.

I have a theory- I am not sure if there is a soul mate for every person in the world, but I am convinced there is a pair of Levis jeans for every man and woman. (Interestingly this theory also applies to Ray Bans)
It really frustrates me that there is a Levis store in almost every mall in the city and yet they only seem to house skinny jeans for women. Levis makes so many different cuts and styles for women- there is something for everyone. Hi rise Boot cut, straight fit, flared jeans, the iconic 501’s, cropped jeans- the opportunities are endless.
If you are able to travel out of the country or have friends that might, take advantage of that and find a Levis store. Take a look at the international websites for Levis and I am certain you will find a pair that wont let you down, or you can ask your local store if they might receive shipment in the style you like and try to talk to their customer care. If you are lucky you might just manage to find the pair you are looking for.
5) Sundresses that you can wear to sunset parties and beyond
Brunches and sundown party season is right around the corner and a good sundress can take you through the party season swimmingly. Most people think of sundresses as floral flowy numbers, which are lovely; but with labels like Reformation, Renge and Lola By Suman B reinventing classics with luxe fabrics, the sundress has certainly gone through a makeover, and in a city like Bombay can definitely be worn all year round.
Layer with a blazer for work, a pair of converse sneakers for the movies and sandals for a Sunday sundown- you can create multiple outfits with just one dress. In my opinion, a good sundress that fits you well and makes you feel happy deserves multiple wears.

6) A good tailor
Granted this is not an item to store in your closet, but a good seamstress/ tailor is essential for every person. No two people have the exact same body, and yet there are only a handful of sizes on the market. Mass produced clothing in most stores can be a hit or miss, so it always helps to tailor clothes you purchase from the high street. Whether it is taking an inch off a hemline or making a dress more fitted to suit your frame, a good tailor can make an average outfit look like it was custom made and you don’t have to let go of a garment you like just because it doesn’t fit. There really are no rules as to how much or how little you can have tailored. If you find yourself in a fitting room trying on a dress that you love and is maybe too big in some parts or too long, just bring it to a tailor and you will be all set. (I have even bought a dress and turned it into a top, really there are no rules.)
7) Band tees
I feel like a band tee always adds personality to any outfit, whether it’s a movie reference or an artist you really like, a band tee can be styled in so many ways, and always works as a conversation starter. The best part about band tees is that you can always purchase them from the artists merchandise page directly, or even from Amazon, Etsy and Forever 21.
I also like band tees because even if you outgrow them or borrow one from a S.O they work as Polaroid’s and always have interesting memories attached to them.
8) A pencil midi skirt
There is just something about this silhouette that is very timeless for me. A fitted midi skirt just lies on the border of appropriate and provocative and can be flattering on anyone. Regardless of body type, I think this garment could work for women at any age. Just look through various fabrics and textures until you find one that works best for you. If you lean towards a more feminine style you can pick flowy chiffons and pleated silks, if you want to wear one of these to a date night find one with a slit, or a houndstooth print for the office.

9) The Boyfriend Fit
The best part about this style is that you don’t actually need a boyfriend to make oversized clothing look cute. A men’s sweater/ shirt cinched in with a high waisted belt to make a dress, or a blazer used as a coat can be so stylish. Its 2017, people should be able to shop in the men’s or women’s section regardless of their gender am I right?
10) Cheetah Print
I am well aware that this is a polarizing issue and many women will stay away from animal print no matter what. Personally, I find that a subtle hit of Cheetah print can really wake up an outfit. It could be a punchy evening dress or a skinny headband, a scarf, the lining of your handbag, a wallet or a belt. I feel like a little goes a long way with Cheetah print, and a touch of animal print is to an outfit what a red lip is to makeup. There are multiple colors, styles and shades to choose from, and you can integrate it into your wardrobe in your own unique way.
